Electric Car Grant 2025: How Your Business Can Save Up to £3,750

Helping UK businesses switch to EVs for less

Electric Car Grant Returns; What It Means for UK SMEs

The cost of upgrading to electric vehicles has been a sticking point for many small and medium-sized businesses. But that could be about to change.

The UK government has reintroduced the Electric Car Grant (ECG), offering businesses the chance to save up to £3,750 per vehicle on eligible fully electric cars and vans. For SMEs running one vehicle or an entire fleet, this could mean lower running costs, reduced tax bills, and a smoother transition to electric.

Here’s what you need to know, and how your business can benefit.

What is the new Electric Car Grant?

The Electric Car Grant is a £650 million government scheme aimed at making electric vehicles more affordable for UK drivers and businesses. It replaces the old Plug-in Car Grant and forms part of the UK’s wider push to cut emissions, support British manufacturing, and help businesses control costs.

From 16 July 2025, manufacturers can apply to have their vehicles approved for the scheme. Once approved, the discount is built into the vehicle’s price meaning that for a leased vehicle, the saving is automatically reflected in your monthly rentals.

How much could your business save?

The grant is available at two levels:

  • £3,750 – for vehicles meeting the highest environmental and manufacturing standards.

  • £1,500 – for vehicles meeting the core requirements but not the top-tier sustainability criteria.

Eligibility rules:

  • Must be fully electric (zero tailpipe emissions).

  • Price capped at £37,000.

  • Must meet high safety and environmental standards.

Why it matters for SMEs

For many SMEs, switching to electric has been a challenge due to high upfront costs and uncertainty around charging and running costs. The return of the grant helps to:

  • Lower total cost of ownership – Leasing with the grant can reduce monthly rentals significantly.

  • Free up working capital – Less tied up in vehicles means more to invest back into the business.

  • Cut operating costs – Electric vehicles can be up to 60% cheaper to “fuel” compared to petrol or diesel.

  • Boost sustainability credentials – Demonstrate commitment to ESG goals, which can help win tenders and attract clients.

  • Enjoy tax benefits – Low Benefit-in-Kind (BiK) rates for electric company cars make them attractive for directors and employees.

When will the discounts be available?

Manufacturers can start applying from 16 July 2025, with the first list of approved vehicles expected by 11 August 2025.
The scheme runs until at least the 2028–2029 financial year, but acting early means your business could secure the most popular models before demand spikes.

Which vehicles are likely to qualify?

While the final list is due in August, many well-regarded electric vehicles fall under the £37,000 limit, including:

  • MG4

  • BYD Dolphin

  • Vauxhall Corsa Electric

  • Fiat 500e

  • Volkswagen ID.3

  • Jeep Avenger

  • Renault 5

  • Smart #1

Some manufacturers are already offering discounts ahead of the grant’s official launch meaning businesses can start benefiting now.

Why leasing makes the most sense for SMEs

Leasing with the Electric Car Grant means:

  • Lower monthly rentals without tying up cash in depreciating assets.

  • Access to newer, more efficient vehicles every few years.

  • Reduced maintenance downtime — improving productivity.

  • Ability to scale your fleet up or down as business needs change.

At Kinetic Vehicle Leasing, we’ll make sure any grant savings are factored into your quote from day one — and we handle all the admin so you can focus on running your business.

The bigger picture: infrastructure and running costs

The grant is launching alongside improvements to the UK’s charging network and EV incentives, including:

  • Over 82,000 public chargepoints already installed nationwide.

  • One new charger going live every 30 minutes.

  • £63 million invested in home and on-street charging solutions.

  • Low or zero road tax for EVs and preferential BiK rates for company car drivers.
