• Stellantis (Peugeot, Vauxhall, Fiat etc.) has voiced doubts about EV profitability at scale.

• Even Mercedes-Benz said its full-electric targets may take longer to reach.

In short: the EV rush has slowed. Not stopped, but definitely paused for breath.

🚧 Why the Change in Direction?

There’s no single reason - it’s a mix of market realities:

• Demand has softened. Early adopters have already bought in. The next wave of buyers is more price-sensitive and less convinced.

• Charging infrastructure remains patchy. Range anxiety and public charger reliability are still real barriers.

• Cost of living pressures. Many consumers simply can’t justify the higher upfront cost of an EV right now.

• Used EV values have dropped. That’s spooking both private buyers and fleet managers.

• Electricity prices are up. The cost-per-mile gap between EVs and ICE has narrowed.

• Hybrid efficiency has improved. For many, a plug-in hybrid offers the best of both worlds, and manufacturers are leaning back into that.

Not exactly, but it’s no longer on death row.

Governments are relaxing deadlines. The UK’s 2030 ICE ban has already been pushed back to 2035. Other markets are following suit. And crucially, manufacturers now see that keeping petrol and diesel options on the table, especially clean, efficient ones may be necessary for longer than expected.

It means choice at least for now.

• If you want to go electric, there are still great options out there.

• But if you prefer ICE, or need something hybrid for practical reasons, manufacturers are keeping those options alive.

• And if you're in a business or fleet setting, it means you're not being forced into a tech that might not yet work for your use case.

The EV future is still coming. But maybe not quite as fast or as exclusively as we were led to believe.
